Although it is the world's 12th most populous country, the Philippines savings rate of 19% to 23% of GDP is the lowest in the region. Around three quarters of the country’s population do not yet have a savings account.  The Philippine fund industry is also the second smallest in the region.

The stock market will attract more foreign funds once the country receives an investment-grade credit rating, Philippine Stock Exchange president Hans Sicat said Wednesday. Manulife Financial Corp. sees its Asia operations making core earnings of $1.65 billion and generating core return on equity (ROE) of 26 percent in 2016, the company said. The asset-management arm of the ATR KimEng Group is bullish on Asia with the launch of a new mutual fund which will invest in listed stocks in the region, providing its clients with a more diversified and flexible portfolio. In a press briefing, ATR KimEng Asset Management (ATR AM) vice president and international equities manager Julian Tarrobago Jr. said the concept to launch the AsiaPlus Recovery fund was borne out of the company’s belief that growth in the region will remain robust.
